Artist's Comments

This is my submission for DeviantArt Academy.

I want to work on having no black lines. I want to work on realism. I have a cartoony style, and I like it, but I want to be able to draw something truly beautiful.

Yay for self-portrait!

Hi there! :) I`m giving my critique only for the character cause I think thats what you`d like to hear. First of all, I guess it be good for you to study some anatomy and keep practicing (but thats why we are in this program right?! ;) ). Ok Im starting on top. The head seems to be positioned too far on the left, at least the mouth is. You could work a bit more on the shape of the chin. The right shoulder has a different size and shape then the left. You might want to give the left hand and the feet a bit more shape. Right now its just squares. If you go here [link] there are a lot of great tutorials on hands, feet, body, poses etc. They helped me a lot. Another thing I can point out is that drawing a character up front alway makes the drawing look flat. You can give it more depth by choosing a 3/4 point of view or another perspective. [link] Thats another turoial where you can learn a view things :) I hope I could help a little...

drawing with out lines is a big jump to do, you must first get used to structure and drawing what you see.

ask your self while you look at the mirror, do you really look like that? its not style im talking of, but are the shape of your legs straight like that? do other shapes look like that? once you get used to really pay attention to what you see you'll notice the little shapes that make up the body.

great thing of know those shapes will help you shade better in the future.

and when you learn to shade better, you no longer need lines.

you get where the big jump is? so you first need structure, folds and well, checking your self out some more in front of the mirror

have a brighter day :)

I like how you colored it and the introduction was cute. The clothes could have something to make it stand out more and the anatomy needs work (i.e. the shoes).

Sorry for my lateness!!!

CG - Be bolder with your shading, show more contrast between light and dark. In the beginning, you might want to set down 3 main tones. The base colour, a shadow, a dodge.

You know what? Since I'm not very good at explaining in words I shall make a picture >_>

Here: [link]

Besides the 3 main tones, I added in two extremes of unsaturated colours. I once read a tutorial on realism somewhere that you should try not to finish off your darkest/brightest colours with bright hues but grey-ish hues. I'm not too sure how true this is since I don't specialize in realism OR line-lessness xD But you may wish to try it out =]

Remember, hair is made out of strands. Since you're going for realism, this becomes more important as it's much more defined than anime styles (mine xD). Think.. a photo of a real life person VS a cartoon.

I added some shading to your picture using the colours. Please don't follow my style of shading xD I don't know how to shade clothing folds, I just wanted to show you what I meant by "bolder" shades. Since like what cetriya said, it's shading that will define your art without lines.

Lines - I know this is meant to be line-less, but I noticed the edges of your drawing, especially the shirt, is blurred. Try to keep them sharper although they aren't lined xD

Eyes - They are shaded too! Maybe not absurdly sparkly like an anime style, but real life eyes also reflect light. Stare at your eye in the mirror xD Basically, it consists of an iris, pupil and eye white. All these 3 areas are shaded. Since it's round, it tends to have a shine.

You can just put a white dot if you're not sure what to do. (see left eye of the picture).

Neck - Another top is that the neck is usually a shade darker then the face because the face casts a shadow over it. Though this may not always be true depending on where the light is coming from.
